Cancellations received in writing prior to January 15 will be subject to a $50 (US funds) processing fee. Due to costs NCDA incurs, NO refunds will be given after this date. If paying via purchase order, your organization will be required to fulfill the purchase order. Refunds will not be given for no-shows after the Institute.

NCDA's Credentialing Commission has approved the CPI according to the 2018 Continuing Education Manual

NBCC ACEPNCDA has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP #1003. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. NCDA is solely responsible for all aspects of this program.

After the event, NCDA will send an electronic link to the evaluation form.  After completion of the evaluation, the system will direct you to your online membership record where your continuing education transcript can be printed.

PDI #1 Grow Your Advocacy: Working with Marginalized Students in Higher Education
The outcome data are clear. Historically marginalized students do not typically achieve the same benchmarks as more privileged peers at any point in the college student development process. Decades of transition programs, remedial pathways, and cultural awareness programs demonstrate little consistency in promoting improvement of the most important academic and career outcomes. Many career professionals today experience the “Groundhog Day” sense of running the same programs again and again without seeing sought after gains.

This practical, interactive Professional Development Institute will encourage participants to take a fresh look at their practice, searching for opportunities to Grow Your Advocacy from the ground up. 

Throughout this 4 hour workshop participants will expand their advocacy action toolkit to include personal plans for working directly with clients (in individual or group settings), core principles for reviewing office policies that impact clients’ fairness experience, how to engage strategic partners in new ways, and examples of campus-wide initiatives. 

Essentially participants interested in reenergizing their advocacy efforts while improving outcomes will develop a new plan answering the questions:

What can I do in the room?
What can I do in the office?
What can I do with strategic partners (e.g., employers, university division, alumni)?
What can I do campus-wide?
And of course, how can I measure and report the effectiveness of these programs?

Join NCDA as we travel to the NASCAR Hall of Fame located a short distance from the hotel. This is a great opportunity to learn that there is more to the auto racing industry than just being a race car driver! You will hear from experts in the field and learn about this fascinating industry. Your afternoon will wrap up with a brief independent tour of the Hall of Fame including several interactive exhibits.

Dr. Nassar recently served as University Scholar to the Research Triangle Institute’s International Development Group on Government and Economic Development/Workforce and Economic Opportunities, where she consulted with various internal and external stakeholder groups on career and workforce development. While there, she conducted a global study to gain consensus among experts across policy, research, and practice domains, which led to development the Career Builders Toolkit. She will share with the audience the practical guidance and wisdom in the Toolkit gleaned from this array of career development experts.

How can you empower and inspire your clients/students if you cannot identify and access the necessary resources? Internet resources are available 24/7, so take advantage of them! NCDA also offers publications that are valuable everyday. Specifically, an overview of the new “A Comprehensive Guide to Career Assessment (7th ed.)” will be shared (including the new online companion). Here is your guide to the award-winning NCDA website and specific career resources that will benefit you and your clients/students.

Learn How You can Advance Your Career Skills in a Wide Variety of Settings and also Specifically in K-12 Schools
This is a two part presentation by the Training & Education Council for NCDA.  We will begin with The Facilitating Career Development (FCD) curriculum created over 25 years ago for people who provide career services in a wide variety of settings who were looking for further career training.  We will overview the 12 competencies covered in the class, brief history, the value of this course, and the credentials available once you complete the class. The second part will focus on the new SCDA training and credential which is to help people create a Career Development Culture in K-12 Schools.  Focused efforts in career development programming based on standards, theory and outcome-based interventions can go  far in creating a career development culture that connects home, school and community. Programming designed to support student self-knowledge, career exploration and employability skills is essential to student success in the 21st century workplace. Discussion will focus on challenges for School Career Develop Advisors as well as specific benefits for students and community. NCDA’s new SCDA training and credential will be highlighted.

Protean/Boundaryless Formal Assessments: Applicability, Usage and Purpose for Returning Veterans
This workshop will introduce the concept of the Protean job seeker and how boundarylessness translates into employee fit for the returning veteran job seeker.  Additionally, this workshop will introduce formal assessment concepts that help career practitioners illuminate the traits necessary for job advancement based on employer observation and practice.
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
-Define the career development factors related to the Protean/Boundaryless career seeker
-Explain how the interview process is evolving beyond applicant competence and toward applicant fit
-Interpret the employment related meaning associated with employee competence and fit for the returning veteran applicant
-Apply interpretation results to a real-study

Mindfulness and Work/Life Balance
Mindfulness is a form of self-awareness that is described as "a state of being in the present moment and accepting things for what they are without judgement". Being mindful helps you to be better able to recognize levels of self-awareness in regard to your own thoughts and feelings. This is very important when handling relationships and work/life balance. Gaining a better understanding of these dynamics helps you to decide how you will react to life situations. Mindfulness creates a sense of space within yourself. With time and practice it opens up a new dimension of freedom, relaxation and stillness. The result being increased productivity and better decision making.
