Have you been secretly, or perhaps not so secretly, thinking about starting your own career practice?  Wondering if now is the right time to do it?

If so, then join us for a virtual panel discussion featuring four successful private career practitioners who will share their thoughts, insights and advice to help you decide whether or not you should make the plunge.  The panel will be moderated by Karen Chopra and panelists include Paula Brand, Shauna Bryce and Bret Anderson. 

Participants will learn about:

  • Opportunities for private practice and contract career work
  • Ways to structure a private practice, including policies and best practices
  • Marketing tools, from networking to social media
  • Use of technology to improve efficiency and service delivery

Karen James Chopra, LPC, MCC, NCC, is the founder of Karen Chopra Consulting (www.KarenChopraConsulting.com), which helps therapists, counselors, coaches and other consultants create thriving businesses.  She also has a well-established career counseling private practice in Washington, D.C. (www.ChopraCareers.com), and has helped hundreds of clients with career exploration, job search and career management.  A former U.S. Government trade negotiator, she is the author of Coaching Career Clients on Salary and Other Workplace Negotiations, and specializes in helping clients navigate all sorts of workplace negotiations, from job offers to severance packages. MCDA has honored her with both their Outstanding Career Practitioner and Lifetime Achievement awards. She received her M.A. in Community Counseling from the George Washington University, and her B.A. from the University of Virginia.   She also has a master’s degree from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service.


Bret Anderson, Ph.D. is the President of h2 Communication, LLC® (h2C).  h2C is a Veteran Owned Small Business Job Readiness Training and Executive Coaching and Frontline Leadership Development company.  Research and publication focus areas for Dr. Anderson include but are not limited to Career Development for Homeless & Incarcerated Veterans, Employment Retention remedies for Returning Veterans with PTSD and/or Cognitive Impairment, and Exceptional Employer Outreach Strategies for Homeless Veterans.  Before establishing h2C, Dr. Anderson worked with the National Veterans Training Institute (NVTI) for 28 years.  Dr. Anderson earned his Ph.D. in Psychology from Northcentral University, his Masters in Communication, and Bachelors in Communication from the University of Colorado Denver.  He holds the following certifications/credentials: Certified Career Services Professional – Instructor (NCDA), Accredited Financial Counselor (AFCPE), Offender Employment Retention Specialist (NIC), Offender Workforce Development Specialist (NIC). 

Paula Brand, MS, GCDF, CSNS, JCTC, CPRW, is the founder of Brand Career Management (BCM) with a passion for empowering mid-career to executive women.  BCM helps professionals strategically transition and manage their careers, apply effective job search techniques and leverage social media tools to secure their best career options with ease. Utilizing a master’s in applied psychology along with four industry certifications, she has inspired thousands of professionals to take charge of their careers.  In 2014, Paula was honored to receive two industry awards:  the Maryland Career Development Association’s (MCDA) Outstanding Career Practitioner Award and the Professional Contributions Award from the Middle Atlantic Career Counseling Association (MACCA).

MCDA is a division of the Maryland Counseling Association, Inc.(MCA). MCA is an NBCC-Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 2021, and may offer NBCC-approved clock hours for events that meet NBCC requirements. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC Credit are clearly identified. MCA is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs.
