Some of the most widely used new theories today relate to narrative techniques.  Dr. Mark Savickas’ Career Construction Model uses a set of questions to identify the core identity of the client.  After a identifying a client’s core identity, Dr. Mary McMahon’s Systems Theory is useful for identifying the issues in the client’s world that impact the expression of the client’s core identity.  Before making decisions, an understanding of Jim Bright’s Chaos Theory of Careers helps clients gain perspective on incorporating opportunities into future paths through life.  When looking for ways to make a living, Bill Burnett’s Design Thinking is useful in helping the client formulate a realistic plan.  These four theories will be briefly introduced with case studies illustrating how each produces different results when using them with clients. 

Marilyn Maze, Ph.D., is the Business Manager of PsyCoun Institute and the Executive Director of the Asia Pacific Career Development Association.  Marilyn is a Fellow of the National Career Development Association and received NCDA’s President’s Award and the NCDA Credentialing Commission Service Award in 2016. She received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Maryland Career Development Association in 2010. Dr. Maze formerly developed the ACT Profile (previously called DISCOVER).
