Informed DEI: Using Broaching & Bracketing to Process Adverse Career Experiences

The talent pool to fill and create work opportunities is vast and yet many suffer from ills in society, which can defer, stifle, or discourage one from swimming to achieve goals. Clients and students may seek a career practitioner to solve a particular circumstance and not realize the significance of addressing an adverse work experience. Career counseling, coaching, and development are becoming more sought after from diverse populations in a broad range of socioeconomic identities. It is imperative for career practitioners to recognize and address diversity, equity, and inclusion concerns and issues when providing services. Providing culturally competent and appropriate services will allow practitioners to build an effective alliance, assess adverse work experiences, and cultivate useful strategy for clients and students.
Objectives:
- To explore issues minoritized people experience relating to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace.
- Participants will be able to understand broaching techniques.
- Participants will be able to utilize broaching as career practitioners.
- Participants will be able to evaluate how to effectively bracket as career practitioners.
Participants will be able to use culturally appropriate techniques to work with clients’ and students’ experiences of work traumas.
Roni K. White is the founder and therapist of Apricity Wellness Counseling. She created the “Women in the Workplace: Leadership, Barriers, & Struggles” series. Ms. White’s professional work encompasses counseling in the areas of mental health, pastoral, career, college, and wellness. She has created webinars and workshops, educated within K-12 education, published in professional publications, and performed curriculum writing.
Ms. White co-directed multiple JHUDC TEDx Talks, two Think Circle events (a JHU career services conference), presentations at multiple Regulatory Affairs Professional Society Career Day conferences, and NCDA global conference presentations.
Additionally Ms. White has been a contributing member on the and Reach For College Program Committee, as well as the former Chairperson for the Montgomery County Alcohol and Other Drug Addictions Advisory Council, where she served for nine years. Currently, Ms. White is an active member of the American Counseling Association, where she serves as a member of the Neurocounseling Interests Network, and a contributing leader with the Native American Concerns group for the Association for Multicultural Counseling and Development, as well as current Advocacy Chairperson for the Maryland Counseling Association. She maintains membership with the National Career Development Association and former co-chair on the Research Committee. Additional active memberships include Maryland Career Development Association, National Employment Counseling Association and ACPE.
Roni is the director of the Pastoral Counseling and Care Ministry at Olney Baptist Church. She designs seminars and series to assist participants in aligning values into their daily lives. She has co-presented virtual Bible Study series. Ms. White is a contributing member of the Global Youth Empowerment Roundtable. She engages in advocacy to build awareness, promote action, and encourage change through social justice by addressing education reform, college access, income disparity, mental health parity, homelessness, ethnicity inequity/inequality, gender inequality, and disparity in healthy food resources; as these are essential responsibilities to her as a citizen of the world.
Ms. White holds a BA in Psychology, MS in Human Services with a specialization in Marital, Family, Couples, Counseling and Therapy, graduate certificate in Addictions Counseling, and a Certificate of Advanced Study in Pastoral Counseling.
Dr. Jarvis Watson serves as Assistant Dean for Student Support Services at Stony Brook University, where his work often focuses on issues relating to diversity, equity, and inclusion. He had previously served the University as its Interim Chief Diversity Officer and as Assistant Dean for Multicultural Affairs.
Dr. Watson received his doctorate in Educational Administration, Leadership, and Technology from Dowling College in Oakdale. He earned a master‘s degree in Counselor Education from Kean University in Union, NJ, and his bachelor’s degree in English from Stony Brook University.
He’s a member of the American Counseling Association, the American College Personnel Association, the National Association of School Personnel Administrators, and several other professional organizations.
A frequent public speaker, Dr. Watson has given keynote addresses and other presentations before more than 15 regional and national academic conferences and events. He also co-hosts two podcasts: The Rejected Stone Podcast and Trusted Voices of the Community.
